The CPU can detect when an app is multithreaded, and runs as many cores as possible in that situation—there's the "adaptive" part.
Intel points out that many popular apps are multithreaded, and therefore really allow Turbo Boost–enabled chips to show their stuff. Those apps include a handful of high-end games (sometimes using patches, as in the case of Far Cry 2), many content-creation tools like Photoshop CS3 and 3d Studio Max, and a bunch of mainstream apps like Cyberlink's Power Director 7 and Pinnacle Studio 12. Using the multithreaded Adobe After Effects, Intel claims the 2.8-GHz Core i7-870 can outperform the 3.33-GHz Core 2 Duo E8600 by 66 percent. The extra cores may help there, of course, but the chip also outperforms a 3-GHz Core 2 Quad Q9650 by nearly 40 percent. Impressive.
In comparison with a Core 2 Quad Q9400 (also 2.66 GHz though with 2MB less L3 cache), the mainstream i5-750 shows a 15 to 30 percent performance boost from Turbo Boost, in various benchmarks and real world applications. Turbo Boost is arguably more interesting in these mainstream chips than in the higher-end Core i7 chips and even the new high-end 860 and 870. That's because those enthusiast parts tend to run full-steam all the time, and don't have much headroom for temporary boosts. The Lynnfield chips' 95-watt TDP lets them crank when needed—juice the frequency and get more power, yet the chip still stays within that TDP.
Lynnfield chips use the same basic memory architecture as Bloomfield ones, minus one memory channel, letting Intel boost the memory speed support up to 1,333 MHz. That missing memory channel means these new chips won't see the gargantuan memory bandwidth of those high-end enthusiast parts: Core i7 chips with triple-channel memory could in theory see bandwidths of 35.6 GBps.
Intel believes these new CPUs should work better than ever in Windows 7, thanks to a few key improvements in the new operating system. One thing to watch for is core parking. The scheduler in Vista and XP would often assign two threads to the same core, meaning they were competing for the same resource. Other times, the scheduler would spread them out correctly, but performance was often erratic due to this. Intel believes this issue has been improved in Windows 7: The scheduler is finally aware of Hyper-Threading, improving its ability to schedule threads. And it keeps threads running on an individual core whenever possible rather than moving them between cores almost at random, which imposed a bit of overhead.
